Pre-Conference Workshops

A System Overview of LTE

September 17, 2012 • 8 AM – 5 PM
- Lunch and Course Materials will be provided

Registration: Before 8/1: $595        After 8/1: $695

Summary: The big story in wireless in 2012 is the rise of LTE (Long Term Evolution). Even though the first deployments happened in late 2009, LTE has been gaining momentum worldwide in 2012. The major wireless carriers are rolling it out in more and more areas, making large investments to upgrade their infrastructure to provide it. One of the main features of the just-released and best-selling 3rd generation iPad, other than the retina display, is its LTE communications capability, the first for any iPhone, iPad or iPod. What is LTE and how is it better than earlier 2G and 3G systems? In this workshop, we provide an overview of the major features of this revolutionary wireless system. These features include the new air interface based on OFDMA, the all-IP core network, and inter-working features with other networks to provide access to a common IMS-based service platform. We also highlight some of the challenges and issues related to LTE and its deployment, such as the provision of voice services (LTE comes without native circuit-switched capabilities), traffic offload (e.g., femtocells) and the need for more self-organizing capabilities.

Who Should Attend: Wireless engineers, managers and technology strategists who would like to get more familiar with LTE.

Benefits: We cover many aspects of LTE in one day, to give a broad overview and help those who attend to see the big picture. Main points will be highlighted, so those who are new to LTE will not get lost in the many technical details of LTE. While not a primary focus, we will also touch upon how the new and evolving business challenges that come with LTE are resulting in evolving business models, challenges and issues. Thus, workshop attendees will also see how the industry is wrestling with various issues and challenges even as it embraces LTE.
